Information about POLAND For centuries, Poland has been a bridge between the East and West and this has made for a turbulent history. However in spite of this and the dramatic changes shaping Polish society today, the country has vigorously maintained a distinct sense of culture and community. The Poles are hospitable people who proudly welcome visitors. It was once one of Europe's cultural powerhouses and you can now visit one of the many painstakingly restored old town complexes, the Royal castles of Warsaw and Krakow, the former capital, and the old palaces erected by Poland's magnates. Small local feasts, fairs and festivals, often dependent upon local folklore, occur throughout Poland, with a pleasing glut in early summer and early autumn. Christian celebrations in Poland are of huge importance and any Sunday is good for getting a taste of Polish devotion and religious fervour. Poland has steadfastly pursued a policy of economic liberalization throughout the 1990s and today stands out as a success story among transition economies. It is now undergoing major restructuring since its acceptance in the EU.
